Welcome to 8th Grade Global Studies!

My name is Nick Meyer and I’m very excited to be teaching 8th grade Global Studies this year at Franklin Middle School.  I have been teaching in Minneapolis for over 10 years at the middle school and high school levels.   This is my second year at Franklin and I look forward to getting to know the students, families, and staff of the 2016-17 year.

I grew up in Minneapolis and attended Minneapolis Public Schools as a child.  I graduated from Southwest High in 1997 and then pursued a college education.  I attended Northland College in Ashland, Wisconsin and graduated in 2002.  I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education-Broad field Social Studies with a History Teaching Minor.

After graduating college I decided to travel before starting my teaching career.  Traveling is one of my favorite things to do!  I spent two months driving through Mexico and Central America with my girlfriend-now wife.

Some of my hobbies include traveling, cooking, camping, fishing and hunting, playing hockey, photography, and spending as much time with my three children as possible.

This year in Global Studies we will take a journey across the globe and discover some of the unique characteristics of the seven continents.  We will be investigating the world and its great diversity using the five themes of geography.

In the first unit of the year, we will learn the tools of geography and how to use them.  The course layout for the first 3 weeks includes the following:

Week 1- Which tools do geographers use?  Obtain and analyze geographic information using these tools.

Week 2- Creating maps of high quality.  Using TODALSS to describe where you live and some major characteristics of our city.

Week 3- Use geographic tools to analyze and explain where and how people live in North America.   We will also be solving some problems using geographic information systems.
