Parent Welcome Letter

Welcome to 7th Grade ELA!

My name is Kristin Clarke and I am so excited to have your student in my class this year! English language arts class is all about reading and writing. This year we will be focusing on narrative writing and storytelling with a focus on justice. We will start our first unit on story structure and short stories with a grade level field trip to the Minnesota Center for Book Arts this fall. As a class we will read four books:

  • The Breadwinner by Deborah Ellis

  • Smile by Raina Telgemeier

  • One Crazy Summer by Rita Wilson

  • Baseball in April by Gary Soto

Students will create a class blog that they will post in weekly, keep class journals, write short stories and essays, and participate in class discussions. Every week students will take a short quiz on the learning goals of that week. Larger unit tests (specifically about the books we read as a class) will also be given throughout the year. All assignments must be turned in the week that they are due. Late work will not be accepted in this class. Students can access assignments on the class website and extra copies of work are available in the classroom. Grades are updated and posted in the classroom weekly. Your student can also access grades in the student portal, and families can access their student’s grade through the parent portal.

I look forward to working together this year with you and your student!
